One day, newly engaged, I was with Ed, my fiancé, in a beautiful canyon in California. I wished I could quote Psalm 148, with its list of many aspects of creation, to express my heart full of praise. I decided to try and make up a tune to help me memorize this psalm, so the next time we were surrounded by so much beauty I would be ready.

That began my adventure of memorizing my most needed portions of God’s Word with my own tunes, some catchy, some probably not so catchy for other people. But I love to sing them, and let the Word of God “dwell richly” in me (Colossians 3:16).

Once I have learned a Bible passage, I sometimes change the pronouns to “I” and “me” when I sing it. For example, I have personalized Romans 6:13b: “I present myself to You, as one alive from the dead, and my members as instruments of righteousness to You.” This helps me pray and apply God’s Word to my life.

Scriptures that I sing stay in my memory far more easily than any I learn by rote. I am thankful they are cementing God’s wisdom, joy and peace in my heart and mind. Maybe my Scripture songs will help you do that as well! I hope you are encouraged by them, and most of all, that they will help you treasure God’s Word in your heart.

This is vital, because Scripture teaches us how to know God and how to live (2 Timothy 3:15-17). It helps us not to sin (Psalm 119:11), restores our souls, is sweeter than honey, and promises great reward to us when we keep it (Psalm 19:7-11).

The apostle Peter asked Jesus, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have words of eternal life” (John 6:68). You may want to try making up your own Scripture tunes. But however you do it, store up His eternal words in your heart, to know Him, to follow Him, to honor Him.
